Dr. Maxine Makinson–Shefki was born in England, and is a graduate of the University of Bristol Veterinary School in 1975. Upon graduation with honors, she married Dr. Dinjer Shefki and came to do an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since completing her internship, Dr. Maxine has worked in New Jersey, and is a co-founder of the Hawthorne Animal Hospital in 1981. She has a dog and a cat, a son and a husband, not necessarily in that order, and they all love her. Dr. Maxine has been the principal surgeon at our facility. She frequently gets referrals for surgeries not performed at other hospitals. On occasions she sees clients during office visits, and is our official rabbit doctor! She has a pilot’s license, and enjoys scuba diving, reading, gardening, and being a spectacular mom.
